Dr. John Allen, MD currently serves as the medical director of Healthy Life Recovery. Dr. Allen graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed his Residency in Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). He has served the San Diego community in private practice for the last 30 years, focusing on addiction and substance abuse recovery, psychotic disorders and treatment of severe and persistent mental illness.
Dr. Allen served as chairman of the San Diego County Mental Health Board for two years, and is the former president of the San Diego Psychiatric Society. In addition to his role as medical director at Healthy Life Recovery, Dr. Allen is the clinical director of the Outpatient Services Program at Alvarado Parkway Institute. He is also a certified diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
Dr. Allen specializes in psychopharmacology, using the most current, non-addictive and non-habit forming agents to treat debilitating psychiatric symptoms frequently encountered in the course of recovery.
When he’s not working, Dr. Allen enjoys gardening, studying classical piano, swimming laps at the pool and spending quality time with his wife, Tedi, and their wonderful three children and grandchildren.
