In most mental health treatment centers, patients participate in group therapies that aren’t specific to their diagnosis. We spent several years trying to convince mental health primary centers to have diagnosis specific treatment tracks. But we eventually decided that the best way to make a difference in our community (and the world) was by creating our own treatment center with innovative, comprehensive practices.
The Mental Health Center of San Diego has individualized treatment tracks with specific curriculums to match each patient’s diagnosis. For example, our ADD/ADHD treatment track doesn’t have the same curriculum as our bipolar treatment track, and our anxiety treatment track isn’t the same as our OCD treatment track.
After years of working in the mental health industry, we’ve found that many primary mental health facilities are treating patients incorrectly.
What we have found is that after a patient gets transferred to a primary mental health treatment facility for adults, they get placed into a group setting with other people who have completely different diagnoses.
– For example, in a 10-person treatment group, there could be two patients diagnosed with bipolar I and bipolar II disorder, three with ADD/ADHD, two with schizophrenia, and three with major depressive or anxiety disorder. –
Mixing people who are being treated for different issues created huge obstacles for every person in these groups.
One of the main complaints from patients was that they didn’t feel safe or comfortable talking about their diagnosis with other people who couldn’t understand it — which is very valid. An even bigger worry was how a therapist could properly treat the group with so many varieties of mental health diagnoses in the same room.
Facilities should address each patient with a specific diagnosis in different treatment programs throughout the day. It’s a case-by-case basis in which our team works together to come up with the best plan of action for that patient’s success.
Having diagnosis-specific treatment tracks is the future gold standard of mental health treatment; we’re proud to offer this innovative approach first to anyone who is ready to treat their mental health disorders using logic and evidence-based practices.
